INTERCONTINENTAL LONDON THE O2 — CONFERENCE SUITE CHANDELIERS

Canary Wharf, London | Hospitality

PROJECT OVERVIEW

CLIENT: Grove Developments
SCOPE:
 Decorative feature lighting
SCALE:
18 bespoke chandeliers, each 2 metres in diameter with 650+ crystal droplets
PROGRAMME:
20 weeks from redesign to delivery

BELGRAVE ROLE

Project delivered by the founder of BELGRAVE, engaged directly by the client to redesign and deliver a commercially and technically viable solution.

PROJECT BRIEF

The client required a series of large-scale chandeliers to define and elevate the conference suite environment. The ambition was to introduce statement pieces that would reinforce the scale of the space while complementing the interior design.
The original design proposal was not commercially or programmatically viable. A redesign was required to retain the visual intent while resolving cost, complexity and delivery constraints.

THE CHALLENGE

The project centred on eighteen large-scale chandeliers, each two metres in diameter and highly detailed. The initial design was significantly over budget and overly complex from an engineering perspective.
At the same time, programme pressures meant the existing supplier could not meet required lead times. The scale of the fixtures also introduced logistical and installation risks within an already constrained construction environment.

KEY CONSTRAINTS

  • Original design considerably over budget
  •
Programme misalignment with existing supplier

  • Over-engineered fixture design
  • Large-scale logistics (approx. 2.3m packaged size)

  • Installation within a live construction programme

BELGRAVE’s APPROACH

The founder of Belgrave was brought in at a critical stage, working directly with the end client to review and reset the project direction.
The chandelier concept was fully redesigned with a focus on simplification — reducing structural complexity while maintaining presence and visual impact. The revised approach ensured the solution could be delivered within budget and aligned with programme expectations, without compromising the intent of the space.

SCOPE OF INVOLVEMENT

  • Design refinement

  • Specification development
  • Technical validation

  • Drawings review
  • Manufacturing management
  • Programme planning

  • Cost alignment

TECHNICAL RESOLUTION

A key requirement was maintaining the visual scale of each chandelier while ensuring safe installation parameters. Each fixture was engineered to remain below the 80kg threshold, without compromising its perceived mass or presence.

Detailed technical drawings were developed alongside manufacturing partners, supported by finish samples and a scaled prototype to validate both structure and aesthetic before production.

MANUFATURING & DELIVERY

Production was closely managed through staged updates, with visual reporting at each key stage. Prior to shipment, a full chandelier was assembled, installed and illuminated in the factory to confirm quality and appearance.

Quality assurance included both internal inspection and independent third-party verification prior to dispatch.

PROGRAMME PROTECTION MEASURES

  • Pre-assembly and testing prior to shipment

  • Third-party inspection and reporting

  • Logistics planning for oversized fixtures
  • Site access and installation coordination

  • Alignment with contractor programme
  • Night-time installation strategy

DELIVERED SOLUTION

LIGHTING TYPE:
Bespoke decorative chandeliers.
MATERIALS:
Metal structure with crystal droplets.
FINISHES: Gold frame with clear crystal.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
2m diameter with 650+ droplets per fixture.
INSTALLATION CONDITIONS:
Installed within a live construction environment, with night working used to protect programme.

OUTCOME & VALUE

The redesign transformed an unviable concept into a deliverable solution, reducing both cost and complexity while preserving the intended visual impact.

The project was completed within programme constraints, with installation carefully coordinated to avoid disruption to the wider construction schedule.

Night-time working ensured the detailed dressing of each chandelier could be completed without affecting critical path activities.

VALUE DELIVERED

  • Risk Reduced

  • Programme Maintained

  • Design Intent Protected

  • Installation Simplified

RELATIONSHIP OUTCOME SUMMARY

Following completion, additional residential commissions were secured from members of the project team.
